What Does Clay Bar or Chemical Decontamination Actually Do……???

When detailers or car enthusiasts say they want their vehicle clay barred or to have a chemical decontamination in addition to getting their vehicle washed, what do they mean by that? Doesn’t “decontamination” just mean cleaned, so shouldn’t a wash be enough? Why is clay barring or chemical decontamination necessary at times?

So in order to understand the nature of it, let’s talk about what we are taking off of the paint. Over time, your paint will eventually start to build up things such as iron particles, or rust particles as well as dirt, bird droppings, tree sap, or other substances. Most of the time, these contaminants are unseen by the naked eye and you might think, “Okay, so what’s the big deal? Out of sight, Out of mind right?”. What does end up happening is that these contaminants get embedded into the paint/clear coat and will slowly eat away or erode your paint/clear coat, damaging the paint over time. These contaminants will not come out through a simple wash either.

Thats where the clay bar and chemical decontamination comes in! Clay bars and chemical decons simply strip these embedded contaminants from your paint at a surface level and a chemical level and leaves your paint nice, clean, and smooth!

After stripping the paint of contaminants, it is always important to protect that bare paint with some sort of sealant, ceramic coating, or even a wax if that is all you have. Typically decontaminating your paint usually occurs before paint correction or before applying long term paint protection such as ceramic coatings or sealants.

Beware, since clay barring does physically touch your vehicle’s paint, there is a chance that your paint could get marred or scratched at a minor surface level. But do not fear, it can always be fixed through Paint Correction/Scratch Removal.
